DAP has dismissed remarks from the daughter of the late Karpal Singh, Sangeet Kaur Deo, that her father would have disapproved of Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Pakatan Harapan's candidate for prime minister.
The party's secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said that DAP is a democratic party which allowed its members to express different views on various issues.
"People can give their views, those who are loyal to the party can accept and support the party’s decision even though they have a different view," Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, told reporters at Penang's Komtar today, after handing out cheques for missionary schools.
Sangeet told Malaysiakini today that "Based on his (Karpal’s) previous statements, I think he would not have agreed."
Her remarks came in the wake of Harapan announcing the Bersatu chairperson as its candidate for prime minister, along with PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as his deputy, during the coalition's convention on Sunday.
Karpal, who died in a car accident in April 2014, had repeatedly urged the former prime minister to apologise for the sacking of former lord president Salleh Abbas.
Mahathir has denied responsibility for the 1988 sacking, pushing the blame instead onto the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the time.
Lim also denied that the decision to name Mahathir as the prime ministerial candidate was widely criticised by DAP members.
"It is not extensive or widespread. At the end of the day, DAP leaders and members will support the decision.
"Those who do not support are no longer members. They just pretend to be,” he claimed.- Mkini
