GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng took a surprise walk to a roti bakar shop along an alley off Campbell Street this evening, after checking out from his office this evening.
Laughing off rumours of graft-busters coming after him, the CM hung up his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and took a walk with his accompanying police sergeant, two city councillors and his colleagues.
A group of 20 journalists, who were earlier anticipating Lim’s apparent arrest at his office at Komtar, followed him.
“Let’s have a cup of coffee and, remember, what makes Penang great … enjoying a cup of coffee in a five-foot way. This makes Penang great.
“This is to also to remember what the Penang spirit teaches us — which is to face things with determination and to do what’s best for ourselves and everyone.
“So, have a coffee,” Lim said with a hearty laugh, raising a toast to the rest of the people in the shop.
He said he wished he could walk more, saying he had recorded less than 2,000 steps on his FitBit pedometer watch.
Earlier in the day, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed it was “not necessary” for Lim to be arrested as part of a probe the agency was conducting into the proposed undersea tunnel and major roads project in Penang.
He said the MACC had recorded statements from “at least 10 people” as part of the investigation and “retrieved” some additional files from Komtar today.
The 7.2km undersea tunnel will connect George Town’s Pangkor Road with Bagan Ajam in Butterworth. It is scheduled to begin in 2023.
The “three major roads” project involves the construction of roads from Air Itam to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang, and from the Jalan Pangkor-Gurney Drive junction to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. -FMT
