No, I am no seer of what is to be but as one who has been keenly following our country's political developments for much of my adult life, I will like to speak out on my prayers for this homeland of mine.
GE14 has to be called, unless 'MO1' engineers some devious plot to avoid the rakyat having a say in determining who will form the next government.
No political analyst I have read, who is neutral, gives the opposition any chance of gaining control of Putrajaya.
Yet, the fact that 'MO1' has waited until his mandate is about to run out gives me some cause to be hopeful. At the very least, there is hope the BN will still be denied a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Even as legal challenge after legal challenge against the unprofessional and unfair manner the EC is conducting the electoral delineation exercise fails in a judicial system that is no longer the last bulwark against the excesses of the executive branch, the fact remains that the BN's latest efforts to tip the playing field further in its favour has not reached fruition as yet.
There may yet be hope that the rakyat will go to GE14 using the old electoral rolls - yes, BN won with 48% of the popular vote - but it has no two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Pakatan Harapan has given me some cause for hope, there is some light on the horizon. Yes, it is more of the same - it is still shrouded in the same racial politics of old and it is still suffering severe birth pains - yet, there is still a coalition of the willing to give BN a run for its money come GE14.
The rural hinterlands will again be the kingmakers in GE14. I take solace in the fact that in recent years more bumiputra have publicly repudiated BN's policy of divide and rule.
They have shown the lies in the propaganda that non-Malays can take political control of our country. But they have also been in the forefront to push for change in our country.
They realise a community kept in clutches by the BN is in no position to face the challenges of the modern work place.
Of course, the million ringgit question is how far the message has gone down to the folks in the rural hinterlands? Only time and the results of GE14 will tell. But I am cautiously hopeful.
1MDB may be inconsequential to the rural folks but surely the many scandals that have came to light with respect to Felda must have at least, pried their eyelids opened slightly as to how their well-being has not really been taken good care of by BN.
But I have also tempered all these hopeful yearnings with the stark reality that stares me in the face. As I look at the sufferings in more unfortunate countries and the discriminated communities around the world, I know our country is still far from that failed nation status.
Yes, we can survive another BN win in GE14 as we had all these years.- Mkini
