Two individuals with 'Datuk' titles have been arrested in connection with a corruption investigation linked to the Penang state government's undersea tunnel project.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki said the arrests followed a major raid conducted on the island yesterday.
"Two Datuks arrested," Azam told Malaysiakini.
It is understood that one of the men was arrested in Penang late last night while the other was arrested several hours later in Kuala Lumpur.
"The two Datuks are from two separate companies. We have applied for remand orders against them today," Azam said, adding that the remand applications were made in Penang and at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court.
Officers from the MACC headquarters conducted a major raid in Penang yesterday, related to the undersea tunnel project.
Sources in MACC said the raid began at 9am, with targets including several companies working on the tunnel project, which aims to link the island at Gurney Drive with Bagan Ajam on the mainland.
It was learnt that the MACC raided the State Secretariat office in Komtar, the state Public Works Department and the state Land and Mines Department.
The offices of developers Ewin-Zenith Sdn Bhd, 555 Capital Sdn Bhd and Konsortium Zenith in the state capital George Town were also raided.
State secretary Farizan Darus confirmed that federal MACC officers were present at the state Economic Development Corporation's office on Komtar's 25th level.
The Penang undersea tunnel, estimated to cost RM6.3 billion, has been targeted and scrutinised by BN politicians, who have alleged corruption in the project.
