Gobind invokes Section 233 to curb inflammatory temple talk

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Deo Singh said the government will enforce Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) if it concerns national security and racial harmony.
Gobind's statement came after Amanah Youth criticised the government for allegedly being "too soft" on inflammatory comments on social media following the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots in Seafield, Subang Jaya.
"MCMC will definitely be investigating. As far as Section 233 is concerned, I want to make it very clear - when it comes to matters which hinge on our national security and relationship among the races, the investigation will proceed.
"Stern action will be taken," he told journalists at the Parliament lobby today.
Gobind said MCMC is monitoring social media postings and has been working "around the clock".
"They will be giving me a report this afternoon," he said.
Gobind said if any offences had been established, the MCMC will recommend prosecution.
Section 233 of the CMA concerns the misuse of network facilities or services.
However, the provision was criticised by Pakatan Harapan when they were in the opposition for being too vague, allowing the authorities to arbitrarily enforce the law.
Gobind had previously indicated that the section will be amended so as to avoid abuses.
The Puchong MP said he took the inflammatory comments seriously and will also be raising the matter in the cabinet.
"Tomorrow, I will be discussing with the cabinet on measures that need to be taken.
"I'll make a statement on the outcome after the cabinet meeting," he said. - Mkini
