Anwar: Policy debates in Putrajaya don't always match reality on the ground

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim (above) said the discussions by Putrajaya on the issues concerning farmers and fishermen did not reflect the actual problems on the ground.
His realisation on the matter came following his visits to villages in several states for the past months, he said.
"We cannot think that we know everything. We must go to the ground to understand the farmers' problems.
"(For instance) Two months ago, I went to a village in Kedah. The problems that they faced were not the same as those discussed in Putrajaya," he said in his speech during an event with farmers in Selayang today.

The Port Dickson MP said there's a misconception that farmers are lazy and fail to adapt to changes. He said these misconceptions need to be corrected.
"There are those who accuse rubber tappers of only working for several hours in the morning, but do not do anything for the rest of the day.
"I say, why not provide them with a small piece of land so they can plant vegetables.
"We must also offer alternatives for the fishermen who cannot go fishing during the monsoon season," he said.
He cited the importance of having associations such as National Farmers association (Nafas) and National Fishermen Association (Nekmat) which speak for the grassroots and relay messages to the government. - Mkini
