Gobind: Bernama and RTM undergoing reforms, no job cuts for now

National news agency Bernama and state-owned broadcast RTM are both undergoing reforms in the face of the changing media landscape, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
However, as of now, these reforms do not appear to involve job cuts, he added.
"Well, of course, we have seen how the media landscape has changed all over the world, and ... we are moving towards tech-based media which results in a great impact on the traditional print media.
"So this is the reason why there is a need for many of the traditional media houses to consider their business models, and of course at the end of the day, it comes back to commercial viability.

"The question of jobs hasn't come back to me yet. I leave that for Bernama to decide ...
At this point in time, there has been no indication there will be (job) cuts, and for RTM we are also seeing how they can transform," Gobind said in a press conference at the Selangor DAP convention held at the Dewan Sivik MBPJ today.
He said Bernama has already started on reforms to change how it projects itself through new programmes and such.
He also pointed out that RTM has moved away from analogue to digital services.
"I would like to emphasise we are focused on developing staff, and that jobs are very important and if possible, we should try to retain as much as possible," Gobind added.
This comes after the recent incidents of news organisations like Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo shutting down as well as job cuts within Media Prima Bhd, while both the Tamil Nesan and Malay Mail newspapers also stopped operating within the last 12 months. -Mkini
