Behave or lose your mic, speaker tells MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof today warned MPs to follow orders in the hall or to face the consequences, including having their microphones removed from their places.
This comes after Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) refused to leave the hall despite being suspended for two days last Thursday.
The issue was raised by Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Bahru), who asked Ariff why Tajuddin’s microphone was missing.
“He is not here today. But the mic has been taken away although his chair is still here,” said Takiyuddin who then asked if this had been done on the speaker’s orders.
Ariff affirmed this, adding that MPs should leave the hall when asked to do so.
Takiyuddin asked under which law the orders had been given, to which Ariff said he had acted on his authority as speaker.
“If someone is stubborn, I will pull (the mic) again,” he said, adding that he could also ask for the microphone to be replaced now.
He also said such orders applied to MPs from both sides of the divide, denying that he was targeting the opposition.
Shahidan Kassim (BN-Arau) then told Ariff to “pull the chair” as well as the microphone.
“Yes, please, with your help,” Ariff replied before telling MPs to follow the rules of the house.
“I hope when (MPs) are asked to go out, they will go out.”
Last Thursday, the Dewan Rakyat descended into chaos for almost half an hour after MPs refused to remain silent despite orders from the speaker.
Tajuddin accused Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad of being a broker for the Kampung Baru deal while Noh Omar (BN-Tanjong Karang) accused the latter of selling off Malay-owned land.
This led to protests and barbs traded with Pakatan Harapan backbenchers.
Tajuddin was asked several times to leave the hall but did not vacate his seat. - FMT
