Perak exco Paul Yong, who has pleaded not guilty to raping his domestic helper, maintained that he can decide on returning to work as it was he who voluntarily went on leave, to begin with.
This came after an audio recording, purportedly of a senior Perak DAP leader, emerged, slamming Yong for his decision to resume his duties beginning Friday.
Yong is the exco in charge of housing and local government, public transport, non-muslim affairs and new villages.
In the 19-second audio recording, the senior Perak DAP leader claimed that Yong did not get the party's blessing before announcing his return, without naming him.
"Wear DAP's uniform, get DAP's salary, but considers himself as the biggest person. Now some people can announce their resumption of duties on their own.
"There is no need to ask the party. Not a word to the party. I don't want to name names but everyone knows," the voice said.
Yong declined to weigh in when asked for comments by Malaysiakini.
But earlier, Yong, in a text message to NTV7 Mandarin News, said he took the initiative to go on leave on his own accord on Aug 24.
Therefore, he said he can end his leave whenever he deems fit.
Yong added that he had already discussed the matter with Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu who had no problems with it.
The exco also said the decision on whether he is allowed to return to work is a decision for the state government to make.
He also claimed to have the blessing of "leaders from around the country" when he announced his return as an exco, but did not elaborate on who they are.
Yong pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 376 of the Penal Code on Aug 23.
Section 376 concerns the punishment for rape which carries a punishment of between 10 to 30 years imprisonment and shall also be liable to whipping. - Mkini
