PETALING JAYA: Several local actors will take on the role of the country’s top leaders including Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a new biographical movie following the life of the veteran politician since his retirement as the fourth prime minister in 2003.
“Mahathir: The Journey” is the latest in a series of locally produced films on Malaysian politics in the wake of the historic change of government last year.
The movie, to be launched on Nov 11, stars Azhar Amir as Mahathir, Fauziah Latiff as Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, Hilal Azman as Anwar Ibrahim and Dian P Ramlee as Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Produced by Lawrence Poh and directed by Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan, the film follows Mahathir’s political journey over the last 16 years.
As such, Malaysians eager to see how the film portrays the tumultuous fallout between Mahathir and Anwar in the late 1990s, which led to mammoth anti-government rallies in the streets of Kuala Lumpur, may be disappointed.
Still, the producers assure viewers that the film will be fair in its portrayal of Mahathir, whose return as prime minister at the age of 93 made world headlines.
“It provides a clear and compelling narrative of modern Malaysia’s political history as seen through the eyes of its greatest shapers.
“It is neither apology or defence, but a forceful compelling and often exciting account of how Mahathir achieved what he did in so short of time and why,” it said in a statement.
Others playing the role of politicians are Izzat Mustaq (Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman), Afieq Hussain (Mukhriz Mahathir), Muhamad Harminder Singh (Gobind Singh Deo) and Lisdawati (Nurul Izzah Anwar). - FMT
