The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government funding for Jakim in 2020 is RM1.2 billion.
What will Jakim do with it’s RM1.2 billion allocation?
Jakim will protect Islam. It upholds the faith on behalf of the Agong. It will coordinate and develop Islamic education. Jakim is responsible for halal certification in Malaysia. Jakim has a say in almost every service ministry affecting the lives of Muslims and non-Muslims alike and it plays a significant role in the prevention of wrongdoings committed in the private affairs of individuals. In truth, Jakim does not do much for the Rm1.2 billion allocated by this PH government for its use.
“The power of religion should remain in the hands of the rulers. That is their role in the constitution. In the case of halal certificates, the state religious departments are empowered to issue them. If ingredients need to be checked, we have the health and agriculture ministries, which have all the necessary equipment and expertise. Let the Malay rulers and their religious councils and advisers handle the religious issues in their respective states, as they were constitutionally entitled to do as heads of religion” Tawfik Tun Ismail
Any Federal Agency with an annual budget of over Rm 1billion, whose financial history and audited accounts are not available to the public should give us cause for concern. Jakim has “nothing to do with Islam. Jakim is just another department to support Putrajaya’s control of the Muslims”. Datuk Zahid Ibrahim.
Minister in charge of Islamic affairs Mujahid Yusof Rawa defended the RM1.3 billion federal budget given to the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), saying Jakim only spends 40% of the amount. The other 60%, went to the payment of salaries of close to tens of thousands of religious leaders, teachers, and scholars.
But surely if employment of these tens of thousands of imans, guru ta’mir, guru tahiz and others throughout the country who are given employment under Jakim is a major consideration for the continued existence of Jakim, why not consider the 150,000 high-quality jobs created over the next five years if the same amount of money is channeled into special investment incentives packages that can attract Fortune 500 companies and global unicorns in high technology, manufacturing, creative and new economic sectors to invest in Malaysia?
Mahathir doesn’t want to admit that setting up Jakim was an attempt to paint himself as being more Islamic than PAS. Jakim should be abolished as the department has no role in the constitution! Jakim’s relevance in the Malaysia of today is highly questionable. The Rm1.2 billion allocated for Jakim in 2020 would be better used to develop a holistic approach to Islam in Malaysia to combat corruption, power abuse and misuse of public funds and guide the reform of public institutions, where the emphasis must be on good governance, transparency, and competency. These public sins are strongly condemned in Islam and they harm both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The funds can also be used to develop policies to enhance the administration of public religious institutions that are entrusted with public funds such as mosques, waqf and zakat boards.
Remember that the state’s religious departments are already empowered to issue halal certificates. The health and agriculture ministries have all the necessary equipment and expertise if the ingredients need to be checked. The Malay rulers and their religious councils and advisers will handle the religious issues in their respective states. As for Jakim…”Off with their heads!”
