No complaints so far on ministers giving money in Tanjung Piai, says EC

Election Commission deputy chairman Azmi Sharom during early voting in Tanjung Piai today.
PONTIAN: The Election Commission (EC) says it has yet to receive any complaints of federal ministers making announcements or handing out allocations during the campaign period for the Tanjung Piai by-election this Saturday.
EC deputy chairman Azmi Sharom said any complaints should be brought to the relevant authorities as the commission’s scope of power in this regard is limited.
“Only the courts can decide if they (the ministers) are guilty or otherwise of bribing, not the EC,” he said after visiting the district police headquarters here where early voting is taking place.
He added that court rulings on such issues would serve as a guide in future situations.
PH recently came under fire from MCA president Wee Ka Siong, who said the coalition had invested “a large sum of money” to retain the seat won by PPBM’s Md Farik Md Rafik in the May 9 polls last year.
The Ayer Hitam MP also criticised PH for distributing mobile prepaid cards to voters during a ceramah.
When asked about the distribution of SIM cards as well as the RM1,000 cash aid given to fishermen in the constituency, Azmi said a report had been referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Some 280 police officers are expected to cast their ballots in early voting here today.
According to the EC, 53% of early voters had cast their votes as of 10am. - FMT
