PETALING JAYA: A PKR Youth leader aligned with Anwar Ibrahim has paid tribute to Rafizi Ramli, describing the former Pandan MP as an unsung hero ahead of a court trial on his appeal against a conviction for leaking bank account details connected to the scandal-plagued National Feedlot Corporation (NFC).
Syed Badli Shah Syed Osman, the vice-chief of PKR Youth, said Rafizi was a “forgotten gem”, adding that he had been instrumental in the formation of Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the run-up to the general election last year.
But he said Rafizi, who lost a bitter race for the PKR deputy president’s post to Mohamed Azmin Ali last year, did not benefit from the coalition’s historic win.
“There are some leaders who were previously against PH, yet they are now reaping the benefits of the pact. But not Rafizi.
“Although PH won at the federal level, he is without a position in government. What is more sad is that he is forgotten by the administration despite his contributions to PH’s victory,” Syed Badli said, adding that Rafizi was a talented leader who could play a bigger role in the government.
The Shah Alam High Court will decide on Friday on an appeal by Rafizi and former bank clerk Johari Mohamad against their convictions and sentences under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act.
In February last year, Rafizi was sentenced to 30 months’ jail after he was found guilty of disclosing documents comprising balance summaries of bank accounts belonging to NFC, National Meat & Livestock Sdn Bhd, Agroscience Industries Sdn Bhd and NFC chairman Mohamad Salleh Ismail, the husband of former Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Syed Badli said Rafizi’s biggest contribution was his expose of the NFC scandal, which he said had contributed to Barisan Nasional’s fall from power.
