PSM’s Arul summoned by cops over protest at Parliament

PSM deputy chairman S Arulchelvan.
PETALING JAYA: PSM deputy chairman S Arulchelvan has been summoned by the police to faciliate investigations into a World Habitat Day protest at Parliament last month.
Speaking to FMT, Arulchelvan, better known as Arul, said he had been told to present himself at the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 3pm tomorrow.
He said he was informed that the matter was being investigated under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act which penalises organisers of peaceful assemblies for failure to provide the required 10 days notice.
Arul said they provided 10 days notice to the police but not the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) as Parliament did not belong to the city council.
He added they only gathered at Padang Merbok to march to Parliament due to a lack of parking, and were only informed that DBKL did not give their approval the day before the protest.
“This is continued harassment of activists; more recently we saw Rama Ramanathan being investigated.”
He was referring to reports that police were investigating the spokesman for CAGED, a group formed two years ago following the disappearance of activists, over an article last month on the arrest of vocal Sabah activist Jufazli Shi Ahmad earlier this year.
“There are protests in Parliament nearly everyday, the police force’s time should not be wasted like this. Where is the freedom of speech?”
During the Oct 8 protest, Arul said there were no untoward incidents and that the protesters were escorted by the police so that they could submit a memorandum to a housing and local government ministry representative. - FMT
