Teo: Students to learn about statutory rape in 2021

PETALING JAYA: Students will learn about statutory rape and related issues such as child grooming and sexual harassment beginning 2021, says Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching (pic).
Teo said these topics will be covered in the syllabus for Year Six and Form Five students.
She said this when officiating the launch of Jessica Sanders’ "Love You Body" at Scholastic Reading Lounge in Sunway Pyramid on Saturday (Nov 23) in an event organised by Scholastic Asia and the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO).
The book is aimed at encouraging young girls to love their imperfections and celebrate diversity.
Teo also joined 17 girls, aged between 10 and 17, including child survivors of domestic abuse and girls from low income families for a reading and sharing session on topics related to the book.
Teo was candid when sharing her own insecurities about her body with the girls but sent a strong message, reminding them to love themselves and not be defined by labels.
"You need to love yourself, take care of your health and remember that others love you," she said.
Also present were Scholastic Asia regional marketing director Stephanie Wang and WAO executive director Sumitra Visvanathan. - Star
