Umno MPs' role to be check govt, not defend Dr M

JOHOR BARU: The role of Umno MPs is to be an effective opposition and not to defend Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, says a group of the party's MPs led by vice president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Reading the joint statement by the group, the former Johor Mentri Besar said retaining Dr Mahathir as the Prime Minister should not be the job of Umno’s elected representatives.
That task belonged to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), he added.
“Inviting Pakatan Harapan leaders to join Umno is also not their affair, ” he said on Saturday (Nov 23).
The joint statement he read was signed by Kuala Krau MP Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Mohamed Said, Jempol MP Datuk Mohd Salim Sharif, Jelebu MP Datuk Jalaluddin Alias, Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor, Lipis MP Datuk Abdul Rahman, Mohamad, Kuala Kangsar MP Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid and Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
It came in the wake of Dr Mahathir’s claim that Umno MPs who met with Datuk Seri Azmin Ali at his residence were looking to forge new alliances.
Khalid said Dr Mahathir's comment was meant to create turmoil within Umno after Barisan Nasional won the Tanjung Piai by-election.
He reminded the party and its members not to be fooled by Dr Mahathir’s game, adding that Umno politicians have to rehabilitate and revive the party following its defeat in the last general election.
“The only important duty for Umno MPs is to make Umno an effective opposition in Parliament. By providing proper checks and balances, the party can convince the rakyat that it is a progressive political movement, ” said Khaled.
It had been reported that Umno MPs met with Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and a few PKR MPs at his official residence in Putrajaya on Monday (Nov 18).
Responding to speculation about the meeting, Azmin claimed that the meeting was to sort out matters pertaining to allocations for the MPs' constituencies. - Star
