KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has expressed disappointment over the Nazi-style salute by one of its graduating students that went viral on social media recently.
The UMS strategic management and communication centre said action would be taken to ensure there was no repeat of such an incident.
A spokesman said the student’s action in no way reflected the view or stand of the university.
“UMS fully regrets the incident, which saw a screenshot of the incident going viral over Twitter last night.
“The original post on Facebook was taken down by Facebook following condemnation by other netizens earlier,” the spokesman said today.
The spokesman said all graduating students had been informed to look at the camera prior to receiving their scrolls but that the student in question did not follow instructions and went on to make the Nazi-style salute.
“The said graduate then decided to upload his act on Facebook along with his intended reason for acting in such a way,” the spokesman said.
It is understood that the graduate had made the salute to protest against what he deemed to be Jewish dominance of the world and as a sign of support for the Palestinians in Gaza.
Asked about action against the student, the spokesman said the matter was still being investigated. - FMT
