Zambry: Pakatan's Tanjung Piai loss mirrors BN's during GE14

PETALING JAYA: What happened to Pakatan Harapan in Tanjung Piai was a repeat of what happened to Barisan Nasional during GE14, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir (pic).
"During the Tanjung Piai by-election, various promises were made and regulations were imposed, but the rakyat did not care about all that.
"It is now the turn of the current leadership of the ruling party. Suddenly, the rakyat's feelings changed. They were angry. And their anger triggered many other things.
"To Barisan, please learn from this. What happened during the GE14 was a big lesson to be more humble and careful," the former Perak mentri besar said in a Facebook post on Sunday (Nov 17).
The Tanjung Piai by-election saw Barisan candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng win with an overwhelming 15,086-vote majority.
Wee, a former two-term Tanjung Piai MP, garnered a total of 25,466 votes against Pakatan candidate Karmaine Sardini who obtained 10,380 votes; Gerakan's Wendy Subramaniam (1,707), followed by Datuk Dr Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz of Berjasa (850) and two independents, Dr Ang Chuan Lock (380) and Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar (32).
Zambry congratulated Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other top Barisan leadership for making a brave decision to allow MCA to contest the parliamentary seat.
Zambry added that the victory was significant to Muafakat Nasional, the Umno-PAS pact.
"Some are saying that it is not a referendum for Muafakat Nasional, but the strength and cooperation to move the machinery and campaign has proven that the cooperation is getting stronger," he said.
He noted that those from both sides of the political divide could learn much from the by-election.
"MCA should use the momentum (of support) and stand up as the party that has the confidence of the Chinese community.
"Now MCA has two seats in parliament. They have a fresh leaders like (MCA president) Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and (MCA deputy president) Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
"They need to be brave and confident in their debates against DAP, just like Dr Wee," said Zambry. - Star
