SEMPORNA: Seventeen illegal immigrants were detained in an operation codenamed “Ops Gasak” in Kampung Selamat and nearby areas early this morning.
Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) commander Hazani Ghazali said the operation was conducted at 3am and involved the police, Immigration Department, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd, the National Registration Department, the armed forces and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
Kampung Selamat was suspected of being a hideout for illegal immigrants and a hotspot for contraband and syabu smuggling, he added.
“In the operation, 575 persons were screened and 17 were found without an identification paper or in possession of doubtful identification papers,” he said.
The 13 men and four women will be sent to the temporary detention centre in Tawau, some 84km from here.
In the same operation, Hazani said, two 25-year-old men were arrested for having 0.20gms of syabu hidden in a vehicle.
One of the men tested positive for drug use.
Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd officers, meanwhile, confiscated 50kg of cables believed to have been used for illegal power connections. - FMT
