PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should be thankful for the peace and unity among its people, and for having a strong independent economy, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Prime Minister said that the strength of the country is in a mature nation which does not listen to incitement of those with an agenda to create enmity between races and religions.
“We must be thankful that Malaysia is not in riots or at war as other countries. We can uphold our sovereignty without depending on others.
“This is a big success for every Malaysian as we live in unity and help each other even though we are of different races and religions, for all of us love peace.
“Malaysia would not be as developed and peaceful as it is now if there were racial conflicts, ” he said in his Chinese New Year message, broadcast live to the nation on Friday (Jan 24).
Dr Mahathir said economic growth – expected to be between 4.3% and 4.8% -- is very encouraging and has put Malaysia among the Asian countries with the highest growth rate.
“We realise our economy is still small but the encouraging growth is proof that the people have cooperated to develop Malaysia.
“When the country is stable and the people are skilled, domestic and foreign investors will be attracted to invest here,” said Dr Mahathir, adding that the investment approved between January and September last year was more than in the whole of 2018.
He also urged the people to be patient, saying the government needed time to strengthen the economy, as the benefits will be for all.
Dr Mahathir praised the maturity of those who refused to heed to those who incite hate.
“They want to sow hate between us. Their evil agenda is to break our harmony. If we are not rational and hate each other over petty things, these inciters would think they have won.
“Let us usher in this Chinese New Year with a renewed spirit to further strengthen our relationship between races in this beloved country of ours.
“My wife and I wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai,” said Dr Mahathir. - Star
