IGP: Sex video case not shut, probe to recommence if there's new evidence

Police have not closed the file with regard to investigations concerning a sex video in which Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali was implicated.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said the matter would be left as such until there is new evidence.
He was commenting on Attorney-General Tommy Thomas' decision not to initiate prosecution since the identities of the two men engaging in gay sex in the video were unclear.

The case was investigated under Sections 377B and 377D of the Penal Code for carnal intercourse against the order of nature.
"I understand the predicament faced by the attorney-general. His decision not to prosecute is because of the lack of identification evidence and the (poor) clarity of the video,” said Hamid.
"Both firms used by the police (to analyse the video) gave the same answer, same goes to the other so-called firms - blur resolution and cannot identify.
"So the case is not closed. We will leave it to just that until we get new evidence," he told a press conference in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur, this evening.
Hamid also reiterated that police investigations were not influenced by political considerations.
"No such thing as police attempting to play politics. We followed the SOP (standard operating procedure) which has been long established and a norm in an investigation.
"So don't jump to certain conclusions. Let those people (claiming cover-up) accuse me or the police, for that matter, as long as I hold on to the law," he said.
Last week, Thomas (photo) said there would be no prosecution because forensic video experts – both in Malaysia and the US - were unable to confirm the identities of the individuals in the video.
The video first surfaced on June 11, 2019 when the clips were leaked to members of the media through Whatsapp groups.
Following Thomas' statement, Azmin had praised “Allah SWT for letting the light of truth prevail over the darkness of evil.”
“As I have consistently maintained from the beginning, this fitnah (slanderous) video is nothing but a nefarious plot to destroy my political career.
“But whilst those intent on this vile scheme may plot and conspire, I had no doubt that justice would be done,” he said.
Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, hoped that others would not fall victim to gutter politics in future.
After the video surfaced, former Santubong PKR chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz had confessed that he was one of the men in the video and alleged that Azmin was the other individual. - Mkini
