KIMANIS POLLS | Mohamad Hasan has denied Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal’s accusation he labelled the fight between BN and Warisan in the coming polls as akin to Malaysia taking on the Philippines.
Instead, the Umno deputy president said he was merely repeating what had been said to him by a third party.
“I had no (other) intention, I was just repeating what was said to me.
“I did not make any accusations. Look at the video (recording of the campaign),” he said when met at the campaign trail in Binsulok in Kimanis last night.
Shafie, who is Warisan president, had accused Mohamad of labelling Warisan supporters as Filipinos.
On Tuesday, Shafie demanded that Mohamad apologise for his remark, failing which the chief minister threatened to sue for defamation.
Yesterday, Shafie claimed to have instructed his lawyers to send a letter to Mohamad to press for an apology.
Mohamad reportedly made the contentious claim on nomination day for the Kimanis by-election, alleging that locals informed him that they view BN as the party representing Malaysia while Warisan the Philippines.
“People have told me, 'Datuk, those are all Filipinos, they are paid'... but I don't know. I am just repeating what they told me.
"What I know for sure is that Sabahans will change the Sabah Warisan government," he had said.
On Shafie’s claims that Umno failed to develop Sabah after ruling for over 30 years, he said the former, a former Umno vice-president, was only insulting himself.
“That is not true (that Umno failed to develop Sabah). In the 80s, I worked as a bank manager in Kota Kinabalu, many changes were brought (to Sabah).
"So, he is only hitting himself with his spit (meludah ke langit jatuh ke muka sendiri), as he had been in Umno for a long time,” Mohamad said yesterday.
He also admonished Shafie for further claim that former prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein and former deputy prime minister Ghafar Baba also failed to develop Sabah.
Shafie had made the claim when responding to BN’s assertion he did not develop the state back when he held a ministerial post, including as a federal rural and regional development minister.
To this, Mohamad said only those who are of “unsound mind” will bring up the performances of those who are deceased as a comparison. - Mkini
