JOHOR BARU: A single mother was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here with killing her two-year-old daughter.
Nurul Shamira Mazlan, 22, was accused of intentionally causing the death of her only child, Nur Shahana Abdus Quddus, who died at Sultan Ismail Hospital here on Jan 13.
She nodded after the charge was read to her in front of magistrate Rashidah Baharom yesterday.
Nurul Shamira, who is jobless, was alleged to have committed the offence between Jan 5 and 11 from 11am to noon at an apartment in Jalan Kempas Indah, Taman Kempas Indah, here.
She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
No plea was recorded.
Rashidah set Feb 24 for the next mention of the case pending chemistry and post-mortem reports.
The deputy public prosecutor was Benedict Choong Kai Qi while the accused was represented by counsels Mohd Norazihan Adnan, Muhammad Ashraff Mohd Diah and Jack Sumatra.
The accused and her 33-year-old boyfriend were reported to have been arrested by police after the victim died from what were believed to be injuries sustained from physical abuse.
The victim was said to have had multiple injuries, including bite marks on her arms and abdomen.
Muhammad Ashraff said the boyfriend had since been released on bond and would be a witness during the trial. - Star
