The two individuals appointed to lead Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will be Malaysians, not foreigners, Putrajaya announced today.
“Let me stress. These two (firms) are important strategic assets, important transport operators.
“As far as the government’s position is concerned, I am sure the two CEOs (of Prasarana and MAHB) will remain as locals,” Transport Minister Anthony Loke (above, right) said at a press conference at the Finance Ministry in Putrajaya today.
He was attending the signing of a supplementary agreement between Mass Rapid Transport Corp Sdn Bhd and MMC Gamuda Sdn Bhd.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was also present, added that Malaysia has enough local professionals who are capable enough to take on those two positions.
“You look at Malaysians all over the world. They are actually heading very important positions, whether in the US, Europe, China or Singapore.
“I think we have enough professionals able to do this work. The only thing is being able to headhunt the right persons. I think that is probably why the board wants to do a thorough evaluation,” Lim said.
The previous administration had appointed Christoph Mueller (above) from Germany as CEO of Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) in 2015 in an attempt to turn around the national carrier.
He left the position in 2016, long before his three-year contract was up and was replaced by Peter Bellew from Ireland, who subsequently left in 2017.
Earlier, when asked whether any names of potential candidates to fill the two positions have been submitted, Loke said it was up to the board members of both companies to come up with a list of names.
For now, he said, the boards have yet to submit their lists of candidates.
Loke also said there is no time frame given as to how long the appointment of the new CEOs will take.
On Jan 7, it was reported that the Prasarana president and CEO Mohamed Hazlan Mohamed Hussain had been suspended from his position following a decision by the board of directors.
His suspension was purportedly due to “public dissatisfaction” over the Light Rail Transit (LRT) services, which Prasarana operates.
Also on the same day, it was reported that MAHB Group CEO Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin had resigned from his position. - Mkini
