Amidst disagreements among Pakatan Harapan leaders over the issue of power transition, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has urged for such talk to be kept away from the public eye.
Asked tonight if he planned to advise party members about this, he said he would not impose a gag order.
“I think discussions should be internal but again, when you have a democratic culture, it is always very hard to impose a gag order.
“Whilst we do not want to impose a gag order, it is always in our interest to discuss this internally.
“Having a public spat will only benefit our opponents so let us focus on governing, and these issues will be resolved internally,” he said during a press conference in Putrajaya.
Lim also revealed that Mahathir had since set a transition timeline, adding that the Pakatan Harapan presidential council will announce the actual transition date when the time is right.
Despite similar advice from PKR President Anwar Ibrahim on transition talk, coalition leaders have continued to squabble over it about the impending transition.
Yesterday, Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman chastised several DAP and PKR lawmakers for pressuring Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s to step down as prime minister.
This led to pointed replies from Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy, PKR’s Chang Lih Kang and several DAP youth leaders.
Mahathir has repeatedly promised to hand over the reins to Anwar, but the transition has been a constant source of speculation throughout the Harapan administration.
This had been partly fueled by the lack of a publicly announced transition date or timeline.
Mahathir previously said he was prepared to relinquish his post immediately whenever the Harapan presidential council demanded it.
The latest indication on a time frame appears to be after Malaysia hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit, scheduled to take place in November.
PKR leaders, however, have pressured for the transition to happen in May this year to allow Anwar more time to implement reforms ahead of the next general election.
Lim, who is the Finance Minister, had addressed the media today after visiting the booths of the three e-Tunai vendors - Touch ‘n Go, GrabPay and Boost - at the Tesco supermarket at IOI City Mall.
The government's e-Tunai campaign allows qualified Malaysians to claim RM30 through the e-wallet vendors from Jan 15 to Mac 10.
He was accompanied by Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin and her spouse Lee Yeow Seng.
Lee is also the chief executive officer of IOI Properties Group Bhd. - Mkini
