Nothing fishy about AG dropping sexual misconduct case against Anwar, says IGP

There is nothing fishy or insidious about the decision by the Attorney-General’s Chambers to not charge PKR president Anwar Ibrahim over allegations of sexual assault against Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, said Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.
He said it was difficult for the police to obtain physical and corroborative evidence related to the case as the alleged incident took place a long time ago.
“It happened so long ago, one or two years ago. It is difficult, we need the physical evidence and all," Hamid said in a press conference at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
"Whether he (Yusoff) is speaking the truth or not, that is another question but what is the corroborative evidence that we have. That's the problem.

“The decision by the attorney-general (AG) is based on the findings of the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) investigation.
“Nothing insidious, nothing fishy about it. It is straightforward.”
The AGC had yesterday said they would not be charging Anwar over sexual assault allegations made by Yusoff due to lack of evidence.
They said there were “contradictions of material facts” that could not support the prosecution under the Penal Code.
Hamid said if new evidence was to surface, they could always reopen the investigation again.
Asked about the four-hour polygraph test that Yusoff underwent as part of the police investigation into his allegations against Anwar (photo), the IGP pointed out that polygraph test results cannot be submitted as evidence in court.
“We are not going to tender the results of this polygraph test as evidence in court, it is not allowed by law.
“The polygraph test helped but it helped in the investigation to convince the police on whether he was telling the truth.
“If we find he wasn’t telling the truth, we do not have to waste our time. If the polygraph said he was telling the truth, we try to find other evidence,” Hamid explained.
But if there is no other evidence, there is also no point, he added.
As the AGC has said that the case would be lost even if it was brought to court, there is no need to waste time on this, the IGP said.
Yusoff had lodged a police report on Dec 7, 2019 pressing for action after unveiling a statutory declaration that he made about Anwar.
In the declaration, the 26-year-old claimed he had been a victim of molest, indecent exposure and indecent proposals by Anwar at the latter’s Segambut home more than a year ago on Oct 2, 2018.
Anwar has since denied the allegations. - Mkini
