KOTA KINABALU: Police will not hesitate to take action against anyone who causes trouble at a rally to protest the Sabah Temporary Pass (PSS) in Membakut, under the Kimanis parliamentary constituency, tomorrow.
Sabah police chief Omar Mammah said police would beef up their presence at the Himpunan Solidariti Rakyat event if needed.
His warning follows a social media posting by a netizen calling on illegal immigrants to stir up trouble at the anti-PSS rally.
Using the name Aziz Jaafar Lajuna, the account holder urged the illegal immigrants to even bring fishbombs and use them against the speakers.
“We have not received any report on this yet but we will look into it. If it is true, we will step up security control as what’s important is the people’s safety,” Omar told reporters after a working visit to the Penampang police station near here today.
“But do not even once try to provoke or trigger trouble or fights. We will not hesitate to take stern action,” he warned.
For the moment though, he said, police would have minimal supervision there. However, they will monitor the situation so that fast action can be taken if needed.
“The event organiser and the people attending the rally are advised to abide by the rules and the law.”
On the campaign, Omar said: “Everything has gone smoothly in this Kimanis by-election campaign period, without any serious incidents reported.”
Meanwhile, Beaufort police chief Azmir Abdul Razak said they would intensify intelligence efforts. “We will arrest and charge those found with dangerous weapons that could threaten public safety,” he said when contacted. - FMT
