Amanah Youth calls on gov't to provide RM1,500 a month to each family

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Amanah Youth has suggested that the government provide RM1,500 a month to each family unit, given that many are feeling the economic impact of the movement control order (MCO).

According to Amanah Youth deputy head Shazni Munir Mohd Ithin, RM1,500 is the minimum amount needed to meet basic needs such as food, transportation and utility bills.

“As many economists have pointed out, the cost of recession and lack of income are even greater (than such assistance).

“The government should consider redistributing Budget 2020 and prioritising spending in critical sectors today.

"This can be done by diverting the budget of less critical ministries to the most critical like the Health Ministry and other key sectors that can help the people," he said in a statement today.

Shazni also warned the government not to forget those in the gig economy group such as e-hailing drivers, freelancers and petty traders who make their lives selling products on the sidewalk.

He said the government's focus should also be on those who do not have EPF contributions and who are not eligible to apply for the Employment Retention Programme.

“Gig economy groups such as e-hailing drivers, for example - Food Panda riders have to bear daily risks to carry out their food delivery.

“If there is no direct injection from the government in the next few weeks, what is already a bad situation will become worse," he added. - Mkini
