KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim has expressed regret over the assault on PKR vice-president Tian Chua and the verbal abused he suffered earlier today, saying no one deserved such treatment even if they had dissenting views.
The PKR president also expressed regret over the unreasonable behaviour of several supporters who had attacked a party leader.
“They are leaders and sometimes they have differing views and we have no right to react that way,” he told reporters after a religious function at his residence.
Tian Chua, who is aligned to sacked PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, was hit with bottles and slapped by angry supporters on the way to his car after leaving a PKR central leadership meeting. A man in his 30s has since been arrested.
Azmin said the assault on the former Batu MP was proof that PKR is “on the verge of collapse” and blamed Anwar over the incident.
Azmin, who is MP for Gombak, has been vilified by PKR supporters aligned to Anwar, which heightened when he held a series of meetings last Sunday with leaders of Umno and PAS to form a new coalition.
Anwar also said he will not compromise with violent supporters.
“I have no choice but to leave the matter with the authorities as well as the party’s disciplinary board to take action.
“A hardcore supporter must be disciplined and refrain from verbally abusing others and slandering people.” - FMT
