Covid-19: Lawmaker urges gov’t to refrain from taking action against defaulters

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | A Pakatan Harapan lawmaker has urged the government to refrain from taking action against people who default on their loans and bill payments amidst the spread of Covid-19.
Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, in a Facebook post today, pointed out how various quarters have been affected by the virus, with a growing number having caught the virus, others having to go into self-quarantine and some having their offices closed.
“I believe many are probably having difficulties paying their bills.
“As the situation is unprecedented, I urge the government, as well as the relevant agencies, to not halt their services and to refrain from taking action for the failure to pay loans and bills. At least until the virus is contained,” he said.
Fahmi cited rent for the People’s Housing Project (PPR) and DBKL’s Public Housing programme, traders who rent shop lots under DBKL, electricity bill under Tenaga Nasional Berhad, water bill under Air Selangor, sewerage bill under Indah Water Konsortium, Telekom and Unifi bills, as well as loans under Tekun Nasional and the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN), among others.
“We must work together in overcoming this virus. I believe by lessening the burden of the rakyat and with adequate machinery, Malaysia can rise again.
“I also want to express my gratitude to the doctors, nurses and the other front-liners who are fighting to overcome this virus. You are the country’s heroes.”
Yesterday, Malaysia recorded the highest single-day increase of Covid-19 cases, at 190, bringing the total to 428 cases. - Mkini
