Defence minister: 28 nabbed during MCO enforcement

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Twenty-eight individuals have been nabbed during enforcement of the two-week Movement Control Order (MCO) implemented to curb the Covid-19 pandemic, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He also urged Malaysians to comply with the MCO and stay home unless necessary to avoid running afoul of the law.
On Sunday, the Malaysian Armed Forces was deployed nationwide to assist the police in enforcement of the MCO.
In a press conference this afternoon, Ismail Sabri reminded people that the authorities may be forced to resort to legal action on those who obstruct public servants from carrying out their duties and refused to abide by orders and advisory given by the police during the MCO period.
“695 police reports have been lodged. 46 cases are being investigated and 46 IP (investigation papers) have been opened. 28 people have been arrested.
“I urge (people) not to reach the point of legal action by the police. What the government is doing now is to safeguard the safety of self and family,” Ismail Sabri said.
The minister did not mention when the 28 individuals were arrested following the implementation of the MCO on March 18.
Meanwhile, during the press conference, the minister said that there has been an increase in the MCO compliance rate to 95 percent today from 92 percent yesterday.
“On behalf of the government, I wish to say thank you to the people on the high awareness and rise in compliance (with MCO).
“The trend today showed that urban areas have seen fewer vehicles and many areas look quieter, showing high compliance rate, especially in cities,” he said.
Ismail Sabri, however, said there is now a visible trend of those who had gone back to their kampung earlier are now starting to try and get back to their homes or workplaces in urban areas.
“I hope this is not done. We advise to continue to stay at the kampung (during the MCO period),” he said, adding that the police would just advise these people to go back to their kampung pending completion of the MCO period. - Mkini
