CORONAVIRUS | Former deputy tourism minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik has urged Tourism Malaysia to postpone the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign to next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said the money that they are able to save from advertising and promotion should be channelled to efforts to contain the virus outbreak.
When contacted, the Balik Pulau MP said the allocation for VMY2020 is about RM200 million.
Bakhtiar (above) noted that advertising and promotion allocation is separate, and should be around another RM100 million.
"We should be able to channel this fund to the Tourism Ministry if we defer the visit Malaysia campaign," added the Penang PKR chief.
Bakhtiar's remark comes after Tourism Malaysia director-general Musa Yusof said no revision has been made at this point to VMY2020’s target of achieving 30 million tourist arrivals and RM100 billion in tourist receipts.
The pandemic has hit Malaysia badly as the Health Ministry has urged for the ban on social gatherings across institutions nationwide.
Today, Malaysia recorded 125 Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 553 cases.
Ninety-five of the new cases could be traced to a tabligh gathering at Sri Petaling mosque which took place from Feb 27 to March 1.
The total number of patients who participated in the gathering is 338.
The number of patients in the intensive care unit and requiring the aid of a ventilator to breath have also increased from nine to 12.
Last week, Penang postponed its annual George Town Festival, which previously attracted some 250,000 people, to next year (2021). - Mkini
