CORONAVIRUS | The growth in new Covid-19 cases in the country appears to be plateauing, says Health Minister Adham Baba.
He said this is a good sign as the government did not want the exponential growth observed in some other countries.
"We don't want a spike or exponential (increase) like the trends seen in other countries.
"Today, our cases continue to increase but if we look at the numbers, for example on March 16 it was 125 new cases, March 17 was 120 cases, March 18 was 117 cases and today, it was 110 cases.
"So it has started to plateau. This is a good sign for the (movement control) order and control methods," he told a press conference in Putrajaya.
Adham said he hoped that the situation would continue to improve.
"Pray that it plateaus, we have another 12 days (under the movement control order)," he said.
Adham said the plateauing was not only due to the movement control order (MCO) but also, in part, due to increased awareness amongst the people about social distancing.
He said the priority remains on tracing the remaining participants from the tabligh gathering in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, late last month as it is the largest cluster of infections.
The Health Ministry has thus far traced 10,000 out of some 14,000 participants.
In a related development, he said patient 26 is recovering well, and there has been no evidence of further secondary infection from him.
Patient 26 was part of the second-largest cluster of infection after the tabligh cluster.
As of today, Malaysia has recorded a total of 900 Covid-19 cases with two deaths.
