CORONAVIRUS | PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is urging Putrajaya to come up with immediate aid for daily wage earners, to ensure that they do not go hungry during the movement control order period.
"Let's not forget that hawkers, petty traders, fisherfolk, and smallholders, they earn a daily living.
"If aid is not determined for them immediately, they will starve," he said in a Facebook live address this evening.
The movement control order from today until March 31, is meant to curb the spread of Covid-19, by restricting public movement.
While the government has made exceptions for essential sectors, and several select services, most have been encouraged to stay home.
Pasar tani (farmers' markets) and pasar malam (night markets), for example, are not allowed to operate.
Anwar said he supports stopping hawkers from trading during this period.
"But you must remember, they are not ministers with big salaries. They live very moderately and don't have savings to last more than a day or two.
"This needs action. There has been no (government) statements on this, no firm voice from the finance ministry," he said.
Meanwhile, Anwar also expressed concern over a potential third-wave of Covid-19 patients.
He said the government must take steps now to ensure that health services are not overwhelmed if this happens. - Mkini
