KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) has proposed holding court cases online during the movement control order period “to ensure the wheels of justice keep turning”.
SLS president Roger Chin said the law fraternity is hoping the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak and other court officers can issue a practice direction to hold virtual hearings or by video-conferencing in light of the pandemic.
This is necessary, he said, to ensure not only justice for all concerned but also to minimise the risk of spreading the infection among the bench, bar and the public.
“The measures are made possible thanks in large part to the innovations made via the case management system (CMS) platform which is used by the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak.
“Many matters may soon be conducted via the CMS and video-conferencing, which previously required attendance in person,” he said in a statement here today.
Chin said the society hopes virtual hearings can continue even after the pandemic “as the world moves towards virtual and online communications”.
“Having technology available is useless without the willingness to learn and adapt.
“SLS is truly proud of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak which can operate independently of the High Court in Malaya and implement measures which are forward-thinking and more suitable to the local conditions in Borneo,” he said. - FMT
