Journalist charged with fear mongering to send representation to AG's Chambers

CORONAVIRUS | A journalist who was charged with three counts of making statements conducing to public mischief about Covid-19 on her Facebook is sending a representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers to drop the charges.
Lawyer Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos, representing Wan Noor Hayati Wan Alias, 41, also known as “Ibu Yati” informed the matter to the court when the case came up for mention before magistrate Tawfiq Affandy Chin in Kuala Lumpur today.
“I request the prosecution to provide the charge sheet and relevant documents on my client’s case to enable us to submit the representation.
“We will submit the representation to the Attorney-General’s Chambers three weeks from today,” he added.
Following which, deputy public prosecutor Nurilya Ellyna Nor Azmal told the court that the prosecution would hand over the documents today.
The court then set April 27 for mention.
Also present in court today was National Press Club (NPC) president Ahirudin Attan.
Last Feb 5, Wan Noor Hayati pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
She was charged with knowingly making the statements about the virus with an intention to cause fear or alarm to the public or any section of the public.
The three statements were read on her Facebook page at the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman, at 10pm on Jan 26, 2020.
The charges were made under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of two years or with fine or both, if found guilty.
