Logging: M'kini stands by report on environment minister

Malaysiakini

Malaysiakini stands by its report titled "Tuan Ibrahim defends logging in Kelantan" published on March 11, 2020.
The report was based on a doorstop interview after Environment Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man's clock-in ceremony and press conference in Putrajaya yesterday.
Malaysiakini reporter had asked Tuan Ibrahim (photo) to comment, as the new environment minister and MP from Kelantan, about criticisms against the state government over deforestation.
This was because of land disputes involving the Orang Asli community in the Gua Musang area.
Today, the Environment Ministry issued a statement claiming that the report was not accurate. The ministry did not specifically state what the error was.
The ministry said logging was a state government jurisdiction and the ministry's jurisdiction was "environmental issues", restoring biodiversity and protecting our national treasures.
A video of the conversation with Tuan Ibrahim can be viewed at the end of this article. The relevant transcript of the conversation and translation are as follows:
Soalan: Tadi YB kata nak menjaga alam sekitar kan?
Kita kena bincang.

Question: Earlier you talked about protecting the environment. Kelantan is often criticised for logging...
Tuan Ibrahim: Loggers in Kelantan have ISO certification, unlike other states. (The criticisms are) partly due to sentiment, because we (used to be) an opposition state. But we do (take) this seriously, on how to tackle logging. We hope to have a joint agency with the states, (because) logging is under (the) state government. We have to discuss this.
