Mah's Chinese FB post draws flak, netizens tell him to use BM

Malaysiakini

Newly minted Deputy Education Minister Dr Mah Hang Soon has been slammed by netizens for a Facebook post in Chinese upon his first day of entering office.
In a post uploaded on his Chinese Facebook account yesterday afternoon, Mah (above) expressed gratitude for the chance given to him and vowed he would do his best to improve the education quality.
He immediately drew flak from the netizens who asked him to prioritise the usage of Bahasa Malaysia.
They asked him not to repeat the past mistakes of DAP.
"We do not want a China's ambassador in our ministry, right?" said Aliman Khamalrudin.
A Facebook user by the name of Hasnita Shaari asked: "Why Chinese character? Are you the deputy (minister) for Chinese people only? The national language got buried?"
"Not only the Chinese read your post. (Our) Malay friends will also read it. Don't forget this is a multiracial country, (you) should at least use both languages. Remember, this is not China..." wrote another netizen in Chinese.
Mah's post attracted 1,100 comments and 692 shares in less than 24 hours. However, some messages were posted in Chinese to show their support for the deputy minister.
This morning, Mah uploaded the same message on another FB page in Bahasa Malaysia. He also linked the post to his Chinese Facebook page message.
This has appeared to have calmed the anger of some people, but others still continued to warn the MCA politician.
"Prioritise the (national) language over the second language. (If not) the people will dump you like (they did to) DAP," said Muiz Udin.
"... Do not become like DAP? We don't want and we will fight if MCA becomes like DAP," warned Nik Asward Restu.
Jeffry Alang, a netizen urged Mah not to work with Chinese educationist group Dong Zong, which is pushing for the recognition of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
"If you are still adamant of working with Dong Zong, then please resign instead of the people demanding you to step down," said Jeffrey.  - Mkini
