Maiwp to use zakat money to buy ventilators, equipment for hospitals

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (Maiwp) has announced the approval of over RM3 million of zakat funds for the purchase of medical supplies for seven hospitals.
“Maiwp has approved an allocation of RM3.27 million which will be channelled to seven hospitals in the federal territories.
“The aid will be given in the form of breathing equipment such as the (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) Bipap machine worth RM80,000 each, ICU ventilators worth RM150,000 per unit, home ventilators worth RM90,000 per unit and other equipment worth between RM5,000 and RM20,000 each,” said Maiwp chairperson Syed Hussien AlHabshee.
He said this was in line with the campaign to help tackle the spread of the Covid-19 by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic affairs Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.
He added that the council will be allocating special zakat aid to over 24,196 recipients in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
“Each recipient will receive RM500 and the channelling of this aid will involve the spending of a total RM12.1 million, to be channelled in early April,” Syed Hussien said in a statement.
The council added that it had this month expedited the monthly zakat payment on March 19 instead of March 25. - Mkini
