CORONAVIRUS | MCA has filed a formal complaint to Taiwan over remarks made by a Taiwanese TV show guest on Malaysia's handling of the Covid-19 outbreak.
According to MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon, the comments made by Lee Zheng Hao were "incoherent, filled with ignorance and prejudice".
"In particular, (the) distortion permeated when he miscomprehended the burial rites of Muslims when he broached that departed remains were dealt with by the roadside at night.
"Such comments are seriously misleading and offend sensitivities," said Chong in a statement today.
Chong accused the TV station which hosted Lee of attempting to drive viewership instead of presenting the facts.
The complaint will be submitted to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Kuala Lumpur, which serves as Taiwan's de facto embassy in Malaysia.
Chong was referring to an episode of EBC News' "Crucial Moment" talk show on March 24 in which Lee commented on several video clips.
One video clip had shown Malaysian health authorities burying a Covid-19 victim at night.
"Why? There are too many bodies. They can't even cremate them (in time).
"Maybe they need to do it according to Muslim rites. But from what I can see, Malaysia can't even perform proper burials now," he said.
This was of course not true as the number of Covid-19 related deaths remain in the low two-digits.
Lee also criticised Malaysia for having health workers for resorting to makeshift personal protection equipment (PPE) and a demonstration of how suspected Covid-19 patients were "arrested" in Indonesia.
EBC News has since posted an apology on its website and the "Crucial Moment" Facebook page. - Mkini
