CORONAVIRUS | Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government's aim is to lower the arrest rate of those flouting the movement control order (MCO).
This is despite the rising number of arrests during the MCO period, with 828 detained yesterday alone.
"The police arrested the 828 individuals at roadblocks and during police patrols for breaking the MCO.
"Actually, if we look at the increasing arrests, it shows the police are taking harsher action than before.
“Our target is not to increase arrests. Our target is to decrease arrests because more arrests mean that many of our rakyat are still not obeying the order.
"That is why our target is to have fewer arrests so that we can show the rakyat's compliance rate is more complete," he told a press conference live streamed on Facebook today.
Meanwhile, Ismail said the police and army set up 1,520 road blocks during the MCO so far and performed checks on 257,287 vehicles.
There were previously 23 blocks on toll plazas though this was increased to 65 last night and the minister said it would be further increased to 114 toll plazas nationwide.
He also revealed that as of last night, a total of 67,774 police, army, people's volunteer corps and Malaysian Civil Defence Force personnel are on duty.
There are also more in reserve who would be deployed if necessary.
The MCO was implemented starting March 18 and was extended to April 14.
Ismail also said April 1 would see the commencement of phase 2 of the MCO with stricter enforcement and new operating hours for businesses and services. - Mkini
