The new season of Netflix's Dirty Money documentary series has offered a candid look at former premier Najib Abdul Razak, his personal life and his thoughts on the 1MDB controversy.
Much of the documentary, titled "Man at the top", was narrated by Najib (above) himself in an interview with documentary producers at his home.
Juxtaposed against his gym session with a personal trainer and the interior of his mansion, Najib addressed allegations that he and his wife Rosmah Mansor led an opulent lifestyle.
"I think the lifestyle can be explained," said Najib.
While insisting that he personally lived a "simple" lifestyle, he did concede that it wasn't the same with Rosmah.
"I mean, she does, like most women, my wife does like to shop, but... uh... you tend to accumulate things over a period of time.
"Some of the places where she shops... you know she goes to outlets as well. You know?
"I sometimes complain. 'Don't keep those things. You are a hoarder. You keep things for a long time. Get rid of them'. You know?"
The documentary suggested that Rosmah (above) had a taste for luxury goods and jewellery, to which Najib suggested that what she had were all gifts.
"We have friends. Friends do give us presents. And it is not anything against the law for Malaysians to receive presents.
"Every head of government receives gifts, particularly from the Middle East. Your president received gifts from the Middle East as well. It's well documented.
"It's widely exaggerated in terms of my lifestyle. I'm basically a simple person. I love the simple lifestyle," he said.
On the police raid which took valuables linked to his family in 2018, the documentary featured Najib speaking only about the cash.
Najib said that the cash was his way of continuing the tradition of being the head of a political party.
"This was a CSR political account under my name. You see? The donation that was given under the behest of King Abdullah was specifically meant for me as the leader of Malaysia for welfare and political purposes," he said.
At one point, Najib expressed regret that he got Jho Low involved in 1MDB and that this was one of his rare mistakes.
"You have to be responsible for the things you did but you cannot just blame the man at the top for everything that goes wrong.
"I don't think that's fair," said Najib.
