PJ police disperse huge crowd at Section 17 market

Malaysiakini

Authorities deployed a team of police personnel and Health Ministry (MOH) officers to a wet market in Section 17, Petaling Jaya, this morning where a huge number of people crowded the place to purchase their daily essentials.
According to PJ district police chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal, the high number of activities taking place in the market was noticed by a police team during a routine check at about 9am.
The number of people continued to grow until reaching about 100 at one time. However, no small children were spotted.
"After receiving a report on this, police contacted the PJ Municipal Council and was informed that the market was gazetted as a public market (pasar awam).
"We then informed MOH and dispatched our personnel there to advise the public on the risk of contracting Covid-19 in large crowds, and asked them to disperse," Ezanee said.
He said the huge number of people might have been caused by some members of the public not really understanding the risk of infection.
While the National Security Council allowed public markets and groceries to continue operating during the 14-day movement control order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19, Ezanee stressed, the gathering of a high number of people at one time is risky.
However, he added, the public was very cooperative, and the authorities only took about 15 minutes to get them to disperse.
On Monday, prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the government's decision to impose MCO, due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, to be effective from March 18 to March 31.
Under MCO, the government ordered all shopping malls and facilities to be closed throughout the period, with the exception being premises that sell daily necessities such as public markets and grocery stores.
However, the public is advised to keep their distance among each other and refrain from loitering outside without any purpose. - Mkini
