Plans afoot to convert MAEPS into Covid-19 facility

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Preparations are being made at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) to host patients displaying Covid-19 symptoms but are pending confirmation.
According to schematics that have been circulated online, 400 beds are expected to be housed at the facility. MAEPS, which is in Selangor, is the largest agro park in Asia.
A source familiar with the matter told Malaysiakini that MAEPS is being prepared to prevent patients whose test results are still pending from being exposed to other patients who are already tested positive and treated in hospitals.
It is understood that patients housed at the facility who tested positive for Covid-19 would then continue to seek treatment at dedicated hospitals.
When contacted, an aide to the MAEPS COO said they were not at liberty to release any information, but a related announcement could be expected later today.
The government has previously gazetted 409 locations as quarantine centres amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The list of government-owned premises included Institut Pertanian Serdang - an agriculture research facility located about 10 minutes drive away from MAEPS.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah is expected to reveal further details about the MAEPS facility at his press conference later.
On Wednesday, Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry has prepared 5,292 beds, including 1,892 at medical institute facilities.
Noor Hisham said the medical institute facilities could be used to admit asymptomatic patients who tested positive for Covid-19 or those who have mild symptoms.
This would free the beds in hospital wards for more serious cases, he said.
As of noon yesterday, Malaysia have recorded 2,161 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 26 deaths. - Mkini
