CORONAVIRUS | Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his cabinet will contribute two months of their salary each to Tabung Covid-19 to help combat the deadly virus.
A statement by the Prime Minister's Office said the cabinet meeting yesterday has decided two months salary of the prime minister, all ministers and deputy ministers would be deducted and channelled to the fund.
"This move demonstrates the government's commitment to helping those affected by the Covid-19 outbreak," read the statement.
The special fund was launched on March 11 as part of the government's effort to help people affected by the outbreak.
As of yesterday, the total donation amount including government grants stood at RM8,493,103.48.
Currently, the prime minister's salary is RM22,826.65. Two months of his salary would be RM45,653.30.
A minister's salary is RM14,907.20. Two months of a minister's salary amounts to RM29,814.40.
There are 31 full ministers in the cabinet including four senior ministers.
As there is no provision for a senior minister's salary, it is assumed that the salaries are on par with other ministers, meaning that their contribution would total RM924,246.40.
A deputy minister earns RM10,847.65. Two months of a deputy minister's salary amounts to RM21,695.30.
There are 37 deputy ministers in the Muhyiddin's cabinet (see chart below), with a slot for deputy minister in the PM's Department overseeing the national unity and social wellbeing portfolio still left vacant.
The total contribution of the deputy ministers would be RM802,726.10.
This means that the total contribution of Muhyiddin and his cabinet members to the Tabung Covid-19 will amount to RM1,772,625.80.
