CORONAVIRUS | Police have opened 40 investigation papers against people spreading rumours and unverified news in relation to Covid-19 between January and yesterday.
Federal Criminal Investigation chief Huzir Mohamed said out of the total, 11 cases were charged under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code for causing fear or alarm to the public or any section of the public.
The section provides for a jail sentence of up to two years or fine or both if found guilty.
Twenty-six cases are still under investigation while three have been classified as no further action by the deputy public prosecutor, Huzir said in a statement today.
"Police urge the public to stop sharing statement and article which could create worry and fear in society.
"Doing so can cause the police to probe them under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998," Huzir said.
He warned that police would not hesitate to take action against any individual who sensationalises issue in regards to Covid-19. - Mkini
