Terengganu state assembly to proceed without sultan's opening ceremony

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | In light of the Covid-19 movement control order, Terengganu state assembly sitting scheduled to be held from March 23 to March 26 will proceed without the customary opening ceremony graced by Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.
State assembly speaker Yahaya Ali in a statement said the sultan will instead provide a written speech for all 32 assembly members.
"This is allowed under Rule 37 of Terengganu's state law," he said.
Given the latest development, Yahaya said the sitting will also be shortened to only half day on March 23.
As the speaker, he said he is empowered to decide on the sitting's proceedings.
"For this session, the sitting will not involve any head of departments or observers. This session will only be attended by state assembly members," Yahaya said.
Terengganu has so far recorded 10 positive Covid-19 cases.
The movement control order enforced from March 18 to March 31 was aimed at flattening the Covid-19 infections curve after a recent spike of three-digit increase across several consecutive days.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in a live telecast last night pleaded for Malaysians to stay at home throughout the period and observe social distancing. - Mkini
