CORONAVIRUS | The 2020 Olympic Games has been postponed to next year due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, according to an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.
Dick Pound, who is also the British Olympic Association chairperson, said this following an earlier announcement that the United Kingdom is unlikely to send its team to Tokyo this year.
"On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided," Pound told USA Today.
"The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on 24 July, that much I know."
The veteran IOC member said that even though the committee has given itself four weeks to decide on the future of the games this summer, he said that a decision will be announced soon.
"It will come in stages.
"We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense," he said.
Yesterday, CNN reported that Canada and Australia decided to withdraw from the Tokyo games this summer. - Mkini
