PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Sulaiman Md Ali has been sworn in as Melaka’s new chief minister, Bernama reported.
The Lendu assemblyman succeeds Amanah’s Adly Zahari, who was reported to have lost the majority support in the Melaka state legislative assembly.
State secretary Hasim Hasan made the announcement shortly before Sulaiman, 54, was sworn in as the state’s 12th CM before Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Mohd Khalil Yaakob at his office in Ayer Keroh at 3.45pm.
On March 2, Khalil received representations that Adly no longer commanded the confidence of the majority of assemblymen in the 28-seat state assembly.
The collapse of the Melaka state government followed that of the Pakatan Harapan administration which was triggered by PPBM’s decision to quit the coalition.
Earlier today, Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu announced that PPBM, Umno and PAS had agreed to join forces to form a new state government.
On Feb 27, meanwhile, the Johor chapters of PPBM and Umno joined forces to form the state government after obtaining a simple majority in the state assembly. - FMT
