Wan Azizah, Yeoh call for additional allocation for frontliners

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Former women, family and community development minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her former deputy Hannah Yeoh have called on the government to provide additional allocation for frontliners who are risking their lives in the battle against Covid-19.
In a joint statement today, Wan Azizah and Yeoh pointed out that the frontliners were risking their health and safety in ensuring that others stay at home following the movement control order.
Doctors, nurses, the police including traffic police, officers from the Immigration Department, welfare as well as enforcement officers should be provided with face masks and hand sanitisers immediately, urged the two.
“The government should provide additional allocation for the frontliners instead of using existing allocation from the relevant agencies.
“We should be protecting them as they are fighting to protect us who are at home.”
PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution on Monday had urged the government to proceed with a previously approved plan to counter a shortage of three-ply face masks through purchasing all available stocks intended for export.
The former domestic trade and consumer affairs minister said this was based on discussions held with industry players during his last days in office, in the earlier phase of the outbreak.
Then finance minister Lim Guan Eng had approved RM5 million allocation for the government to purchase all available stock.
Saifuddin had urged the government to prioritise the supply of face masks to frontliners out in the field, particularly Immigration personnel, airport staff and hospital staff.
As of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 cases reached 900 following 110 new infections recorded.
Of the 110 new cases, 63 have been traced back to the cluster of infections from a religious gathering in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, which took place from Feb 27 to March 1. - Mkini
